18th Regional Payment Systems Workshop

Aim of the workshop

The workshop aims to provide a platform for central banks of the region to exchange views on the payment system reform process in their individual countries, on the role of the respective central banks in managing change in payment systems and on how developments in the region link with broader global trends. The workshop will focus on a number of major topics: innovations in payments,crypto currencies, developments in wholesale payments, fast (retail) payments, cross-border payment solutions, financial inclusion, and ECB oversight expectations for cyber resilience. Each topic will be discussed extensively and will be analysed in depth.
This multi-disciplinary approach aims at stimulating discussions and providing individual payment system experts participating in the workshop, the opportunity to meet peers and share common experiences and perspectives with a view of contributing to the ongoing payment systems reform process in their own countries. Participants are encouraged to suggest specific issues they would like to address during the workshop and an attempt will be made to incorporate these into the suggested programme. Moreover, there will be sessions for country presentations.

Methodology

The workshop consists of a number of presentations and group discussions, involving officials from the Bank for International Settlements, from various central banks, in particular those represented in the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI), as well as from the participating countries. The presentations and background material provided will cover the experience of the various efforts coordinated by the CPMI.
The workshop is designed to be highly interactive and to enable participants to review major payment system issues in light of the developments in their countries. To this end, discussions have been scheduled after each presentation. In addition, there will be a dedicated parallel panel discussion session during which participants will elaborately discuss: "Impact of payment innovations on central bank functions" and “Endpoint security for wholesale payments.”
