Born in Kadınhanı district of Konya in 1970, Mehmet Aktaş graduated from the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Department of Economics at Middle East Technical University in 1994.

Mr. Aktaş worked as a research assistant at Kırıkkale University and Ankara University between 1994 and 1999. During that period, he completed his master’s degree in Economics at Kırıkkale University. He took his master’s and doctorate degree courses at Ankara University.

Mr. Aktaş served in the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries between 1999 and 2004. From 2004 to 2010, he served as the Head of the Statistics and Econometric Analysis Department and as the Head of the National Accounts and Economic Indicators Department at the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT). He took a position of Vice President at TURKSTAT between 2010 and 2019 and served as Acting President from 2016 to 2019.

Mr. Aktaş is married with two children and speaks English.

Mr. Aktaş has been a member of the Board of the CBRT since 1 May 2019.
