Prof. Mehmet Babacan

Mehmet Babacan was born in Malatya in 1981. After graduating from the Economics Department of Marmara University (lectured in English), he completed post-graduate studies at the John E. Walker Department of Economics at Clemson University and earned his Ph.D in economics from Marmara University. He began his working career as a researcher at Clemson University in the United States.

Returning to Türkiye, he worked as a lecturer, full-time lecturer, department chair and director at Istanbul Commerce University from 2008 to 2014. At the same time, he was working as a researcher in the Economics Department of SETA-Istanbul, and in October 2014 was appointed as an advisor to the Office of the Prime Minister. 

Mr. Babacan earned the rank of Associate Professor in macroeconomics in October 2017. He has contributed a range of publications, projects, research documents and conference presentations, primarily on international trade and governance, economic growth, and political economy. He speaks English and he has been a full-time lecturer at Marmara University Faculty of Economics since March 2023. Prof. Babacan has been a member of the Auditing Committee of the CBRT since 1 May 2015.
